GEORGE MOTCHAN DETENTION CENTER -
A fire is one of the most dangerous things that can occur in a
jail. Correction staff must know how to respond quickly in order to prevent any injuries or loss of life.
That is
exactly what happened at the G.M.D.C. on July 11, when a three-alarm fire broke out on the roof of Housing
Module 14, which caused the displacement of over 300 inmates.
All staff on duty sprung into action to make
a swift, effective evacuation of inmates from Modules 13, 14 and 10 to the Receiving Room and North and
East gymnasiums.
Officers and supervisors maintained order and control throughout the facility, despite
the challenging set of circumstances. Most commendable was the fact that no injuries were sustained by
any staff or inmates during the incident.
"You performed your duties with absolute precision and the utmost
professionalism," Commissioner Schriro said in a message to staff. "Congratulations on a job very well done."
