INTRO NOTE: Insignia worn by members of the military or uniformed civilian forces may have distant kinship, from pre-historic times, with paint patterns on tribal warriors' bodies. The purposes today are similar to then: to identify and to inspire. Tribal warriors presumably wanted their markings to inspire fear in their enemies and solidarity with their comrades in arms. They also wanted those comrades to recognize in the heat of battle who was on their side.
Today's insignias serve to communicate that the wearers are members of a particular force. What the wearers today seek to inspire is respect for that force which the patch and its wearers represent; respect from others who see it; self-respect by all who wear it -- esprit de corps.
Images below were generously provided to this web site by NYC C.O. Barry Raboy who has been collecting Correction patches for more than a decade. His notes appear in white-on-blue type enclosed by quote marks.
