ANNA M. KROSS CENTER -
The staff assigned to the Mental Observation Restructuring Pilot Program at
A.M.K.C. has made enormous strides in implementing a new methodology for the management of the most
acutely mentally ill inmates in our system — setting forth a template that will be replicated throughout DOC.
In the year that the program has been running, there has been a significant reduction in violence, better
participation from the inmates and a better relationship between DOC staff and the mental health staff.
While
maintaining security and attending to the custody of the inmates, the officers and captains in the pilot's three
housing areas have also become integral members of the treatment team. They have shown a remarkable ability
to work with the inmates in the housing areas to develop their own participation in the programming without
compromising security.
It is praiseworthy that these members of service have been willing to make small but
integral changes that go a long way toward building a unified. cross-agency team.
