INTRODUCTION:
WOODBOURNE CORRECTIONAL FACILITY

An aerial view of the original facility

Woodbourne is unique among the State's prisons. While it is classified as a secure medium A facility, it is the only medium security prison that houses some of its general population in cells.

Its architecture sets it apart from the plethora of "cookie cutter" prisons built during the last decade to house New York's burgeoning felon population, and the level of experience and dedication of its security and civilian staff makes it one of the smoothest running of all the correctional facilities in DOCS, one that shows an easy working cooperation among staff whose common aim is to promote public safety and to maintain a safe, secure place in which to work.

The facility today.

The purpose of this booklet is to acquaint the reader with both the history of the facility and its employees and the evolution of the physical plant from its beginnings in the early 1930's until the present as we approach the next millennium.

The work is divided into chapters addressing some of the multiple facets constituting Woodbourne.
