Bronx Historian's Last Visit
To His Name in Asphalt:
John McNamara Square

John McNamara Jr. recalls his father's final visit to John McNamara Square:

I took two photos at "McNamara Square" on Sept.29, 2004. It was a nice warm day.

We had started out from the Throgg's Neck Extended Care Facility where he resided. We went for a haircut at the barber's on Tremont and Miles. Afterwards we went for lunch at the pizzeria on Tremont Avenue just off the corner of Schley Avenue.

After lunch we went over to the "Square." It had been recently spruced up by the Parks Department with new shrubs and bushes; it looked great!

Dad and I hadn't been over that way in a while, so we were pleasantly surprised. He really enjoyed that sunny afternoon visit to his beloved McNamara Square. So did I, and still do again when I look at these photos.

I'm really glad I happened to have the camera with me. Who knew that he'd be gone in two weeks? Especially when the Doctor felt that with medication he had at least another year and a half. I guess some things we just can't predict.
