No reduction can be allowed while working out a fine. The Correction Law directs that each prisoner is to be informed of the opportunity to earch such discretionary reduction of sentence when admitted to the jail and the responsibility of determining whether or not such reduction has been earned rests with the sheriff. When informing the prisoners of this previlege, do not tell them they are entitled to five days per month for performance of duties. Use the language of the statute -- "may receive a discretionary reduction" -- so that the prisoners may know it is within the province of the sheriff to allow or refuse to allow reduction of sentence and that he is the sole judge as to whether or not it shall be allowed. A record of reduction of sentence so earned and other information concerning the prisoner should be kept in a book as prescribed by the Correction Law (Section 252), including the name, date of sentence, term of sentence, fine, 24
