However, one must be a member of the group to post anything on it. With a "closed" group, one must be a group member to see any messages as well as post any messages on it. Ours is "open" because the FB group is an outreach activity of the NY Correction History Society's correctionhistory.org website. Established in 1999, NYCHS' mission is to promote as well as to pursue and preserve the history of correctional services in NY. Of those seven then, the New York Correction History was the only "open" group. The other six are all "closed" groups; that is, only group members could read messages posted on their group pages. The New York Correction History group, because its mission includes promoting history of NY correctional services, is "open" in the sense that any Facebooker can visit its group message board (page), see the images and read the messages posted. However, only members can post images and messages. But by November 2015, the number of 1000+ membership groups had increased to 12. Still, the New York Correction History group retainsd 7th place in membership rankings among all 41 groups listed.
2 -- If the reader knows of any NYC DOC-related Facebook subscriber group not listed above, please provide the group's name, URL (address), type (open or closed), the admin's name, and the membership count. After verification, it will be added to the list. Additionally, if the reader is a member of one of the four formerly listed groups, please contact that group's admin to contact the New York Correction History group admin (Thomas McCarthy) regarding verification for relisting. Also please contact the webmaster/admin at
NewYorkCorrectionHistory@groups.facebook.com or nychs@nyc.rr.com or correctionhistory@gmail.com with any suggested corrections and additions.
3 - The above listing does not include what might be called "Facebook non-group" pages of NYC DOC-related organizations. For example,

Correction Officers for Christ,
Emerald Society, New York City Department of Correction,
NYCD Columbia Association,
the New York City Department of Correction Hispanic Society and
HDM Organization
have interesting pages on Facebook that any FB subscriber may visit, read and write comments, become a "Friend," and kept track of the organizations' activities. Several DOCers, current and retired, are members of a global group called The Correctional Officer Brotherhood whose 14,878 membership comes from various states and countries, not just NY or the U.S.
4 -- Then there's yet another variety of Facebook association in which an identity is created as if by an individual FB subscriber complete with profile data (employer, college, activities, interests, etc.) and limiting full visibility and communication only to "friends" (members of the group). Case in point: Tier Rats MC, a group of about 20 current and former DOCers who motorcycle. Their history goes back about a decade. They also have a website: http://www.tierratsmc.co/ There's an identity called the Boldest Sailor and another calling itself Queens House/Courts. These Facebook identities are not FB groups as such. But those who become their FB "friends" can post and read messages somewhat like members of a FB group.
5 -- The disclaimer in the caption beneath of the graphic at the top left corner of this page is intended to make clear, for the record, what common sense immediately communicates to viewers of the Facebook group pages listed above: that those social media entities are independent activities of the respective FB group members involved and, as such, have no official recognition, status, affiliation, etc. with that municipal agency (nor for that matter, with the correctionhistory.org website or its New York Correction History FB group).
6 -- Nevertheless, this webmaster/FB group admin would be remiss not to acknowledge and express appreciation for the gracious help and courtesies extended to him by the "admins" of the groups listed above since the New York Correction History FB group began in the spring 2011. He believes providing the above listing renders a service to the general NYC Correction community which, in this digital communications era, extends far beyond the five boroughs. He seeks to expand the listing to include all such Facebook NYS Correctional groups.

To NYCHS home page.
