The following citation with the Mayor's Award to Correction Officer Philip Travers is taken from the Medal Day 2011 booklet.
CORRECTION OFFICER PHILIP TRAVERS, E.S.U.
Officer Philip Travers, the Rapid Re't
take time to ease back into work at DOC
after his return March 1st, from a 90-day
military tour of duty. In just the past two
months, Officer Travers has responded to
over 25 medical calls.
In September, he took
immediate action to assist a discharged
inmate after she fell on the curb in front off
Visit Control building trying to catch a bus 01
Rikers Island, seriously damaging her nose.
With the help of K-9 Officer Ruby Malofsky,
Officer Travers checked for possible airway
obstruction, controlled the extensive bleeding
and treated her for shock, all the while
monitoring her vital signs, demonstrating
medical skill, compassion and clear
communication in a difficult situation.
He has also been a great help in searching for
contraband. On October 20, Officer Travers
made the second largest heroin contraband
recovery in ESU history -- nearly beating his
own previous record for the largest heroin
contraband recovery in 2009.
Officer Travers
has been a member of the United States
Military since 2001. After 4.5 years of service
with the Navy and Marine Corps, Officer
Travers joined the NY Air National Guard.
Officer Travers is currently assigned to the
102nd Rescue Squadron, as well as being a
member of the NYS Homeland Emergency
Response Force.
He was recognized by
his superiors on Aug. 1st with the Military
Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal for
his volunteer work as an EMT for the past
five years. Officer Travers has been with the
Department since 1987.
