The 5th 1930s Rikers virtual tour close-up shows the dormitory complex that in the aerial photo comes immediately below the open area which eventually became fields for baseball and other athletic activities and outdoors events. The huge knob-like items atop the roofs apparently contained the dorms' ventilating fans. There was no air conditioning in the penitentiary or the dorms. For a ground view of the dorms, see slide 16 of the 72 slides in the Mid-1930s Rikers Island Penitentiary Photo Montages elsewhere on this web site. Use your browser's "back" button to return here.

Veteran current and former NYC DOC staffers and others who can correct, refine, enhance and increase the information in the close-up image caption above are invited to do so. Include the close-up's virtual tour image number in your e-mail to the webmaster@correctionhistory.org
