SOME HIGHLIGHTS FROM LETTERS TO & ABOUT MANDY
ON EVE OF RETIREMENT AS CCA RETIREMENT CONSULTANT

  • Capt. Mandanici and I have been friends almost 40 years. When I was a Correction Captain, Mandy was President of the CCA.

Then Queens DA Tom Mackell swears in Mandy as CCA president.
I completed my seminary studies one year after my retirement. When I was ordained as a minister, Mandy asked me to become the CCA Chaplain. He wanted to make sure that his chaplain was dressed properly, so he bought me a dark suit and robes.

A few years later when I was commissioned a Chaplain in my Army Reserve unit, Mandy bought me officer's uniforms. When I became pastor of the Church in Mount Vernon, NY, Mandy became a supporter of our many activities. He is there with our children every summer for our annual pizza party.

Mandy has helped so many people over the years, I know that God has a special place for him in His Kingdom. . . .

    CCA Chaplain Winston M. Clarke

  • The secret can now be told. After 50 years of dedicated City service, a thorough analysis has indicated that the major reason for Al Mandanici's success can finally be revealed: endurance!

Couple that with the fact that he had a firm belief in a set of principles concerning the critical work performed by his membership, the Captain as First-Line Supervisor - the backbone of the Department... And that he felt secure in their loyalty and support...

And that in the performance of his duties as President, he was . . . reasonable, determined but not threatening, and of utmost importance, he was respectful, loyal, and trustworthy.

    That's my friend, Al Mandanicl.

Joe D'Elia [Mr. D'Elia is a former Commissioner of the NYC Correction Dept.]

  • In my life I have had outstanding tutors, but one who has stood out in my mind is the Captain of all Captains, Alfred Mandanici.

The license plate says it all.
Mandy, a most compassionate person who knows no boundaries in giving and sharing of himself for the betterment of all, regardless of ethnicity, gender, and culture.

Joseph M. Ramos [Mr. Ramos is a former Deputy Commissioner of the NYC Correction Dept.]

  • When you think of someone who is considerate, compassionate, and has concern for others, you think of Al Mandanicl.

He is the lifeline between the CCA office and all retired Captains. Mandy is tireless, hard-working, always running the office effectively. He is fair, firm, and consistent, and the office will not be the same without him.

CCA First Vice President Ronald Whitfield

  • Although I have worked with Mandy at the CCA for a relatively short time, only 10 years, he has become one of the unforgettable people in my life.

    At City Hall ceremony.
He has taught me so much about unions, providing service to members and loyalty to old friends. His unique style - that's Mandy.

    CCA Office Manager Fran Mulvaney

  • I first met Mandy way back when I was just a pup and like everyone else sought advice and friendship. As Mandy is today, he happily opened his arms and took me into the fold.I learned understanding, compassion, a passion for the job and for the people who became my extended family. Behind his gruff facade, Mandy hid the real person, one of love, enthusiasm, and tenacity. He not only fought for his Captains, but for everyone else who came to him. Many ranks owe their lives and their jobs to Mandy. Mandy retire?! I can't believe it! It is truly the end of an era. . . . He will always be in our hearts and prayers. Bon Voyage, Mandy! We love you.

Frances M. Patterson [Ms. Patterson is a retired NYC Correction Dept. Warden.]

  • Mandy and I go back almost 40 years. . . He never forgot me whenever there was a celebration of the Department of Correction by calling me up or sending me an invitation. May he have an enjoyable retirement.

Father Charles Repole [Father Charles Repole served for many years as chaplain for the New York City Department of Correction and the Columbia Association.]

  • I have been privileged to have a relationship with Mandy for the last 30 years . . . My friendship with Mandy has enriched my life. Experiencing how he treated his family and the people around him made me a better man; among many things, he taught me the true meaning of fairness and morality. If the world were made up of "Mandys" we might have a lot of yelling and screaming but there would be no wars - only love! In the course of a life, you can identify one, or two, or maybe three people who helped shape your life. I am proud to say that Mandy has been one of mine! . . .

Irv Mechanic [Mr. Mechanic is President of Mechanic & Associates, Inc., benefit and retirement consultants to the CCA.]

  • The first time I met Al Mandanici he was a rookie Correction Officer who was assigned to the Raymond Street Jail. That was many years ago. He joined the Columbia Association and became a delegate. Later on, he became a delegate for the Grand Council.

As Hollis Community Mayor running parties for handicapped children.

Mario Biaggi was President and I was 5th Vice President. I found Mandy to be very sincere and loyal to Mario Biaggi and to me. He will always be a good and dear friend.

Sal Cangiarelli [Mr. Cangiarelli, retired from the New York City Department of Correction, is associated with General Vision, a CCA provider.]

  • Dear Mandy:
The success the Captains Association and its members enjoy today can be attributed to your early initiatives, dedication, loyalty, and love of the job. I am honored to have worked with you and to have the privilege of being your friend. Congratulations and best wishes for a happy retirement. You earned it. Warmest regards.

Leo C. Zeferetti [Mr. Zeferetti is a former president of the Correction Officers Benevolent Association and a former Member of Congress.]
