A service in memory of all dead on Hart -- estimated at 750,000 in 130 years -- is conducted annually by a volunteer group, as shown above. Inmates may participate. Persons who establish a family member has been buried on Hart may arrange a visit for grief closure. In 1948 on the island's only hill, inmates initiated and completed building, with staff supervision, a monument to the island's dead. The word "Peace" appears on one side as shown below. Ironically just across the road from it, the Army installed and maintained a Niki Ajax missle defense base early during the Cold War.
