Potter's Field

Currently, the largest population on Hart Island consists of the disenfranchised dead.

Potter's Field was established in 1869 when a 24 year-old woman was interred on the island because no one came forward to claim her body.

By the end of the first year, nearly 2,000 more burials occurred.

At this time, there are approximately 700,000 people, many of them infants, buried on Hart Island.
