To Another NYC Isle's Prisons: Fort Jay, Castle Williams

Left: Name over cell door refers to Sturgeon Bay, a 140-foot cutter formerly based on the island. The huge cell likely held many Civil War captives and others afterwards during the island's Army years. But during Coast Guard tenure, it was used to store supplies for the cutter, since based in Bayonne, N.J.
