Vehicular access is limited to government and island-related business and requires prior authorization. These virtual tour images were taken by NYCHS in March 2006 during an arranged visit in connection with NYC-TV filming a "Secrets of NY -- Jails of New York: Secrets Unlocked" segment.

The island has no public transportation system. Public access day visitors and guided tour group visitors travel by foot. Cyclists can bring their bicycles over on the ferry and park them on the island, but there are no areas open to bike riding.

For more information, visit the National Park Service Governors Island web site.
