Shamed by the orphanage
arson & other draft riot outrages, Governor Seymour withdrew his
opposition to formation of an U.S. Colored Troops regiment from NY that the
Union League Club had been seeking to establish. On 3/5/1864, the first such
NY regiment, trained on Rikers Island, marched, in full uniform and with
rifles, to cheers of crowds from E. 26th St. dock to
Union Square.
